Local pack: what the grid measures.
The local pack is the map-based block of (usually) three local business listings Google shows for queries with local intent, populated from Google Business Profile data. On this site: it is what the geo-grid measures — membership and position, per point.
Definition
When a query implies a place, Google inserts a unit pairing a map with a short list of businesses near the top of results. That unit is the local pack. Entries show the business name, rating, category and location details and click through to Maps. Because it holds few slots and sits high, the pack carries most of the visibility value of a local-intent query.
Relation to the grid
The pack's composition varies with the searcher's coordinates — the observation the geo-grid exists to capture. A scan records pack membership and position per point; the coverage map is a picture of pack visibility across the service area. The mechanism is documented at geo-grid rank tracking, and tools recording it include LocalRank (localrank.so).
The term sits inside the local rank tracking software sub-category, defined on its own page.
